六、講員及講題摘要(Abstract)

主講人(Speaker)Josef Nossek (Technical University of Munich, Germany)

1-1講題(Topic)How Much Energy Needs a Bit? --Physical Layer Challenges.

1-2摘要(Abstract)This is an old question, which has already been answered by Shannon. Given
the noise power density, we know how much energy is necessary to detect a bit
reliably. But this does not take into account the energy dissipation of all the
components of a transmission link or even a communication network. For an
energyefficient layout of a transmission system a holistic approach is needed,
which is based on physically consistent models for the different components
reflecting the interplay between the information loss due to imperfect
functionality and energy dissipation. First steps in this direction will be
discussed and demonstrated with simple examples.

2-1講題(Topic)What is the Role of Circuit Theory in Communictaions Engineering?

2-2摘要(Abstract):The high level of abstraction often used in the description and design of communication systems does not always faithfully reflect physical reality.  Circuit theoretic multiport models are a promising approach to physically consistently bridge the gap between mathematical theories like information theory, signal theory and electromagnetic theory.  Such an approach not only provides new insight but may also lead to more efficient system designs. These are topics of great importance for future Standards for mobile communications, i.e. for the 5th generation following LTE. The physical layer still is the key issue for future standards and here circuit theory can play an important role.

講題(Title)Challenges and Opportunities in Big Data

摘要(Abstract):"Big Data" has recently become a hot world-wide research topic. How to explore this important issue and bring a bright perspective and more future opportunities for young generation remains a big challenge for both academia and industry. In this talk, technology trend related to make data, link data, and process data will be first addressed by aking into account the advance of semiconductor industry. Then smart sensors related to data generation, especially for prevention medicine purposes, will be highlighted and followed by some demo systems developed at NCTU.

講題(Topic)Design of On-Chip Stimulator for Biomedical Applications with CMOS SoC Technology

摘要(Abstract):Recently, the electrical stimulations have been used for biomedical applications, such as cardiac pacemaker, cochlear implant, muscle exercising, vision restoration, and seizure suppression. Comparing with the traditional treatments by using medicine or surgery, the electrical stimulation was more harmless, flexible, recoverable, and less-destructive. Moreover, for stable production, CMOS technologies have been used to implement the electrical stimulators. An overview in the field of integrated circuit design for implantable stimulator was presented in this talk. Some basic topologies of output driver designs for implantable stimulators were reviewed. Some advanced techniques to improve the performances were also presented. Since the safety and reliability are the primary concerns when realized the biomedical electronic devices, the on-chip stimulator designs for biomedical applications will continuously be an important design task in advanced CMOS technologies.

講題(Topic)DELTA (δ-) DISCRETE-TIME OPERATOR IN 1-D AND 2-D FILTERS

摘要(Abstract):Conventional implementation of discrete-time (DT) circuits and systems utilizes the shift operator (q-operator). However, in cases where high sampling rates are needed, shift operator based designs can exhibit unacceptable ill-conditioning problems due to clustering of poles at 1+j0 (z = 1). This is translated into very poor coefficient and parameter sensitivity, higher noise gain and consequently poor system performance. Since its inception by Middleton and Goodwin the incremental difference operator (or for short delta (δ-) operator) based designs are being studied extensively in the area of digital control and signal processing. One major advantage of using the delta operator is that as the sampling period T ® 0, the discrete-time system resembles the underlying continuous-time (CT) system, thereby providing a methodology to treat both continuous-time and discrete-time systems in a unified manner. This link is obscured in the usual shift operator based models.  This talk would first address the Calculus involved with delta discrete time operator. Although much work has been done in applying delta operator based theory to digital control and signal processing problems, the significance and usefulness of the operator has not been studied much for the design of sampled data and digital filters.

講題(Topic)Integer Tchebichef Transform, Its Implementation and Application to Image Compression

摘要(Abstract):Presently, there is an undeniable need for novel transform coding techniques promising improved econstruction and reduced computational complexity in the field of image and data compression. Discrete Tchebichef transform (DTT), though possessing valuable properties like energy compaction, is a potentially unexploited polynomial-based orthogonal transform, compared to the much popular discrete cosine transform. Specifically, integer DCT is widely used in the field of video compression in view of its ease of computation and acceptable performance. However, specific features of the image to be compressed, such as the structure and content, profoundly influence the quality of the reconstructed image after decompression. This talk focuses on identifying areas where integer DTT might be an alternative to integer DCT for image compression. An integer transform for the fast computation of 8X8 DTT and a multiplier-free pipelined design for its hardware implementation that reduces the computational complexity significantly are proposed. The talk will also introduce a technique to adapt the quantization performedduring compression according to the characteristics of the imageblock without any additional computational or transmissionoverhead. The image compression performance of integer DTTand integer DCT, using both variable and fixed quantization, areevaluated and compared.
